On 29–30 June 2026, Dr Tetiana Dmytrenko, Chair of the Board of the Ukrainian Modern Digital Science (UMDS), participated in a two-day programme of information and practical training events dedicated to opportunities and practical aspects of participation of Ukrainian organisations in the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme.
The events were held in Kyiv in a hybrid format and organised by the Horizon Europe Office in Ukraine of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU).
Support Instruments within Horizon Europe
On 29 June, participants attended the information event “Support Instruments within the EU Horizon Europe Framework Programme.” The programme covered Ukraine’s participation in Horizon Europe, current opportunities for Ukrainian applicants under open calls, key developments in the 2026–2027 Work Programme, as well as partnerships and related funding opportunities.
Particular attention was given to practical aspects of working with the EU Funding & Tenders Portal, the use of artificial intelligence in preparing project proposals, Open Science, Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), ethical and other cross-cutting aspects of Horizon Europe, funding opportunities for businesses, as well as project evaluation and selection criteria.
From Selecting a Call to Preparing a Project Proposal
On 30 June, Tetiana Dmytrenko continued her participation in the training “Practical Aspects of Participation in the Horizon Europe Programme.” The event was opened by representatives of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine and the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine.
The second day had a strong practical focus. Participants worked on how to select an appropriate Horizon Europe call and analyse its requirements, develop the structure of a project proposal and work packages, and prepare the key Excellence and Impact sections. The programme included group exercises focused on drafting individual elements of project proposals and presenting the results of the practical work.
A dedicated session addressed budgeting rules for project proposals for 2026–2027, including updated forms and key changes. Participants also worked in groups on practical project budget calculations.
Strengthening UMDS Capacity for European Research Projects
Participation in these events is an important component of strengthening UMDS’s institutional capacity to prepare and implement international research and innovation projects under European Union programmes.
Of particular practical relevance to UMDS are the development of competitive international consortia, identification of relevant calls, preparation of work packages, development of the Excellence, Impact and Implementation sections, project budgeting, and ensuring that proposals meet Horizon Europe evaluation criteria.
The knowledge and practical tools gained during the training will contribute to the further development of UMDS’s international project activities, expansion of cooperation with European research, educational, public-sector and technology partners, and preparation of new proposals under Horizon Europe.
UMDS continues to systematically develop international partnerships and promote the integration of the Ukrainian scientific and expert community into the European Research Area.
